Intelligent Transportation System Market to cross $34bn by 2025 Smart Cities trigger Growth in India

The Asia Pacific intelligent transportation system (ITS) market is set to hold the second largest share over the forecast period as major economies in the region, such as China, Japan, and India, are investing significantly in creating megacities and modernizing their transportation networks to facilitate enhanced trade exchanges.

The   ITS market is expected to grow from USD 23 billion in 2018 to USD 34 billion by 2025, according to a 2019 Global Market Insights, Inc. report. Strong outlook with versatile end-user applications will drive  the industry growth.

Roadways held a majority share of the ITS market due to the extensive amount of consistent traffic movement on roadways /highways  demanding innovative traffic management methodologies. An exponential rise in the number of road accidents around the world is a growing concern for government agencies.

In the roadways ITS market, Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) held a majority share of over 34% in 2018 due to the growing demand for reducing traffic congestion in urban areas by enhancing an effective utilization of the prevailing infrastructure. These systems acquire real-time information from roadside traffic sensors and aid in developing effective traffic management strategies. Also, the development of adaptive traffic control solutions is improving the efficiency of these systems leading to the growing adoption of ATMS around the world.

In terms of applications, the traffic management application is expected to hold a major share of over 20% in the roadways intelligent transportation system market by 2025. Reduced traffic congestion results in effective control of vehicle emissions and better estimation of travel times. To improve the overall efficiency of traffic networks and commercial travel operations, such as fleet management on roadways, ITSs are expected to play a critical role over the forecast timeline.

Operation and collision avoidance application is projected to hold a dominant share of over 30% in the railway intelligent transportation system market by 2025. In the airways ITS market, communication and networking systems are projected to exhibit excellent growth between 2019 and 2025 at a CAGR of over 7%. With increasing air traffic levels and rising demand from passengers for in-flight communication systems such as Wi-Fi access, airlines are exploring innovative methodologies for improving communication and the network infrastructure.

The Asia Pacific region is projected to hold the second largest share of the global intelligent transportation system market over the forecast period. Major economies in the region, such as China, Japan, and India, are investing significantly in creating megacities, smart cities and modernizing their transportation networks to facilitate enhanced smart mobility and economic progress. Also, government initiatives in the region for issuing stringent emission norms to combat rising levels of air pollution are expected to contribute to market growth over the forecast timeline.

The emergence and development of 100 smart cities in India is accelerating the demand for different ITSs. Transportation plays a significant role in the transformation of a smart city. An intelligent transport management system is the one which is integrated with Information and Communication Technology that ensures easy commute options for the people in the city. With millions of people choosing to commute via different public transportation options, having a system that is smooth, hassle-free and quick is crucial. The new and exciting ITS applications make cities smarter with technologies like Advanced Traffic Information Systems, CCTV cameras,ANPR, Speed Violation detection systems, Rede light violation systems, Vehicle tracking systems access control systems, In vehicle information systems, electronic signage and variable message systems etc.

Many of the Indian Cities have already turning smarter. The success story of Smart City Ahmedabad Development Limited (SCADL) in transforming their manually operated bus transit system into a smart transportation system has to serve as the best example. An integrated process system that tackles every aspect of the issue helped the city to build an IoT driven transport management system that had everything from software-based bus service system backed by advanced ICT to a cashless open-loop card system.

The Automated Fare Collection Service (AFCS) facilitated the easy cashless payment option via prepaid RuPay card or smartphone for the passengers, while the Automatic Vehicle Location System (AVLS) allowed them to get the current location and other information of the bus, in real time. The Vehicle Planning Schedule and Dispatch System (VPSD) provided a revamped and optimized schedule for the buses and the Depot Management System (DMS) helped with the allocation and optimization of the crew and the overall bus operations. In addition to this, Passenger Information System (PIS) provided real-time bus information via mobile app, website, and in-station boards to enable passengers to plan their route and estimate waiting and arrival times.

Ahmedabad also plans to introduce intelligent traffic management systems in the city by introducing 6281 surveillance cameras by this year-end. The cameras are backed by a AI software engine and can identify 28 traffic offences simultaneously at a traffic junction. These cameras have multi-tier data storage architecture and can track vehicle number plates across camera installed junctions in real-time and maintain a synopsis of vehicle movements.

Mumbai city will soon have a state-of-the-art traffic management system in place at 617 junctions across the city. With the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) in place, Mumbai roads will see more than 4,000 new signals as well as dynamic signage, adaptive software and specialised cameras to decongest traffic & monitor violations.

The ITMS will include 4,705 new traffic signals, 300 red light violation detection (RLVD) cameras, 925 automatic number plate recognition cameras, 300 cameras to identify vehicles moving the wrong way, and 300 cameras for corner parking. The software of the ITMS will be fed traffic data, which will be used to decide and modify timings at signals. Using 1,000 new mid-block traffic monitoring cameras and an adaptive traffic control system, the ITMS will help monitor vehicles that violate traffic regulations and decongest traffic jams.

The Delhi Police will soon have an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) . The project, with an estimated cost of around Rs 1,000Cr will enhance the existing traffic system in the national capital and it will be implemented in three phases. There are plans to install a 3D radar-based Red Light Violation Detection Camera (RLVD) system at 24 junctions across the city to monitor people jumping the red light. With this project, automatic issuance of notices will be sent to traffic violators through SMS for effective prosecution. There are also plans to install gantry-mounted radar-based Over Speed Detection System at 100 locations on major roads.

Similarly, Bengaluru traffic police is getting about 350 new adaptive cameras in the next three months. Besides, the traffic police has also deployed about 1,000 cameras, 100 red-light violation detection cameras to capture and record signal jumping and 30 to 40 Number Plate Regulation (NPR) cameras with the capacity to recognise number plates from among thousands of vehicles. The police also has the software to recognise and record repeat offenders.

Catching red-light violators and managing traffic at 159 busy junctions, Chennai city is set to get automated with the Corporation getting a nod to implement Red Light Violation Detection (RVLD) system by installing ANPR cameras under the Smart City programme. The project will be executed under the intelligent traffic management system intelligent traffic management system (ITMS) for an integrated management of transport, to automate the process of traffic regulation, and to catch violators who over-speed, park illegally, or jump signals.
