Vehicles Actuated Traffic Signals system for Lucknow

Vehicles Actuated Traffic Signals system for Lucknow

To make commuting easier for four-wheelers, two-wheeler and even pedestrians, traffic police and Lucknow Municipal Corporation will soon begin Vehicles Actuated Traffic Signals (VATS) operation system.

The system will make all traffic directions automated. Based on a network of sensors and cameras, it will ensure that any area with heavy traffic does not get any more vehicles for a required time. Instead, it will divert vehicles to lesser crowded routes for better flow. The system, an integral part of the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS), will be implemented in Lucknow in phases.

Besides, vehicles will be asked to adhere to prescribed speed limits for specified roads. Any vehicle flouting the limit would be shown a red signal. This will greatly enhance speed, streamline traffic flow and thereby save time and bring down fuel consumption. If traffic volume in a particular direction goes up, an advanced microprocessor detector will sense this and change the signal time to accommodate this. Similarly, if the system sees a big crowd of people near the zebra crossing, it will give precedence to them.
